How to find a responsible breeder?
When searching for an ethical Hmong Bobtail breeder, make sure the breeder:
-
Is not exploiting the breed for rarity, profit, colors, or other fad breeding reasons.
-
Is not breeding young dogs under 24 months of age.
-
Does socialize their puppies to a variety of stimulations and enrichments, carefully screens potential homes, supports puppy owners, and provides clean living spaces and proper vet care for their dogs.
-
Includes contracts to protect their puppies best interest, including taking back unwanted dogs they've produced to prevent the breed ending up in shelters or rescues. Spay/neuter or no breeding contracts should also be in place for non-breeding, pet quality dogs.
-
Breeds to better the next generation with careful planning on pairings, taking into consideration the overall health, conformation, and temperament to be produced.
-
Health test their dogs before breeding. Recommended breed testing are Hips, Patellas, Elbows, Cardiac, and Eyes through a reputable organization such as the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals (OFA). You can find all current health tested Hmong Bobtails listed publicly on the OFA search database here by typing Hmong Bobtail into the breed search box.
-
Is an active member of the Hmong Bobtail Club of America and agrees to not exploit the breed by following the club's Code of Ethics and Constitution Bylaws.
